"OWL" Give You Some Cake Tips!

I had this cute owl cake to make for
one of my good friend's baby's first birthday!
Yikes!!! Say that 10 times fast!!!
I was tripping up just typing it:-) LOL!

As I was getting started with the decorating,
I thought it would be fun to take pics along the way
and show you how easy it is to frost any image on a cake.

This cute little invitation was my inspiration.
Oh how I love that little owl!!!!

First enlarge and photo copy a bunch of sizes of the image.
The cake was not by my side, so I wasn't sure how
large I wanted Miss Owl to be.

Frost the cake as smooth as you can get it with butter cream.
Let it sit for about 20 minutes.
Now you can lay parchment paper on top and lightly smooth in circles.
But I have a cheap and easy tip for you...
    use a paper towel!!!
I love the imprint image it gives the background of your cake.
Plus they are a lot cheaper than the paper.
    Just sayin'

Cut out the image you want to use and
place it gently on the cake.
Use a toothpick to trace around the outside of the image.

Now it starts to get interesting...
    start cutting the image apart
so that you can get the lines inside the image.
Just make sure you line up the image
with your outside lines each time you move it.

When you are done tracing you should
have a pile of paper parts on the counter.

And your cake should look something like this.

Now just follow the lines with a dark frosting color
and the rest is like coloring.
Fill in each area one color at a time.

Apparently I got camera lazy because there are no
photos as I did each color.

Then because all 1 year olds should have their own "smash" cake.
I wanted to make a mini owl all for her.
    But what to use????
Wilton Mini Bear pan to the rescue!
You can see the pan and what the bear should look like.
To make her an owl, I carved off
the tummy, the arms, the legs, and the ears.
Still doesn't look much like an owl though huh?

Again I forgot to take some pictures...
give me a little slack...it was like 2 am and I was sleepy!

Pipe your outlines and fill in each area with color.

Super cute OWL for the sweet birthday girl!!!

This particular owl is actually photocopied from the birthday girl's invitation. My friend ordered the invitations from Birthday Express and I just photocopied the image and enlarged it to fit the top of the cake. Here is the link to the supplies. http://www.birthdayexpress.com/Look-Whoos-1-Pink-Party-Supplies/66504/PartyKitDetail.aspx

Thank you so much for the prompt reply. I am going to try it this weekend. I am going to buy the tips today. What is the recipe you use for icing? I don't like the too sweet buttercream or the whipped kind either....any suggestions? I didn't know where to email you just know how to leave a comment.

I want to make this cake for my daughter. Did you lay the paper towel on the icing? I'm not sure if I got that right bc I would've thought the paper towel would've pulled the icing up?? Also what do I need to buy...as in cake tip? I figured I'd only need that one. One more question...how do you get icing so smooth? Any adive would be greatly appreciated! Love the cake!

Yes, I let the frosting sit for about 20 minutes before placing the paper towel on top. This particular frosting will harden slightly. If it pulls off on the paper towel, you need to let it sit a little bit longer. Then very lightly press across the paper towel and it will smooth the cake and leave behind a fun pattern. I think for this cake I used a cake decorating tip #3 (for the outline and writing), tip #14 & #16 for filling in the lines) and #18 (for the borders) Feel free to email me if you have any other questions. I am happy to help.

Oh my gosh!! I seriously love this! You have found your calling girl! You are SO talented. Love the tips. . .I would have never know to do these things. Last time I tried to frost a Barney cupcake, it took me over an hour! So I gave up on cake decorating. You make it seem so easy. What icing tip do you use?
