I was so thrilled and excited when Miranda contacted me about joining in on her monthly blog hop. Thank you so much for inviting me to play along. I had so much fun coming up with a unique and different gift idea!!!
This month the theme is Hostess Gifts. Of course, with my blog having turned into mostly a baking blog, I wanted to come up with a cute baked gift that would say "Thank You" for all the parties and picnics you will be invited to.
These would actually be perfect gifts for year round parties or even teacher gifts. Just change out the ribbon to match the holiday, season, or event.
I had some ripe bananas sitting on my counter, so I was pretty sure that a homemade banana bread was going to be my choice for this hop.
But I wanted to make it different. It had to stand out so that your hostess remembers who gave it to them at the party.(you could add a cute little tag too...I thought about that after I had taken pics)
I googled hostess gifts and lo and behold the first link that I opened was one for showcasing bread in a can!
Bingo!!!!This was the perfect "different" look that I was searching for. How cute is the bread in the cans???
The only thing that I would do different next time is fill the cans with more batter. I just wasn't sure how high it was going to raise as it baked, so I decided to play it safe.
I used green bean cans that were thoroughly cleaned. (I may or may not have decided we HAD to have the beans with our meal the other night!) How else was I going to have 3 empty cans?
I also did a search for a new banana bread recipe to try out. I found one from Food Network that I thought would be fun to change up slightly. (The ingredients with the * behind it are the ones that I decided to add to the recipe.)
I hope you like this fun twist on banana bread. Anything with peanut butter cups added to it has to be good, right????
Banana Bread in a Can
(adapted from Food Network)
½ c. brown sugar
½ c. sugar
1 stick butter, room temp.
2 eggs
3 spotty bananas
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tbsp. milk
3 tbsp. sour cream
2 c. flour
½ c. quick oats
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 c. chopped mini peanut butter cups
Preheat the oven to 325*. Cream the butter with the sugars until light and fluffy. Add the sour cream, eggs, milk, and vanilla and beat until incorporated. Smash the bananas and add to the mixture. Beat. Add the baking powder, baking soda, salt, and oats. Mix well. Slowly add the flour until all has been mixed in. Stir in the peanut butter cups. Spray your cans with Bakers Joy and fill about ¾ of the way full. Bake at least 45-60 minutes. A knife inserted in should come out mostly clean and the bread will be golden on top. Let cool in the cans for 10 minutes. Then flip out onto a wire rack to finish cooling. After the bread has cooled, put back in the cans. Top with a layer of wax paper and a layer of tissue paper that has been cut into a circle. Tie with a fun ribbon.
