This comfort food reminds me of home. When I was a kid, my parents made this dish in an old electric skillet. Once the meat and veggies were done cooking, they'd drop Bisquick dough on top and let the dumplings steam until soft and fluffy.
My version keeps all that cozy comfort but makes things easier. Instead of standing over a skillet, I let my slow cooker do most of the work. I toss everything in, let it simmer all day, then throw the biscuit dough on top at the end.
This meal has the same flavors of chicken pot pie, but instead of a crust, it has soft dumplings that soak up all that creamy broth. It's perfect for those chilly nights or whenever you want a simple dish that reminds you of home.
Why You'll Love Chicken and Dumplings with Bisquick

- Cozy and hearty. A thick, stew-like texture, packed with meat and veggies, will warm you up on cold nights.
- Family favorite. It's one of those classic dinners that everyone goes back for seconds. Even picky eaters love the creamy, rich flavor.
Main Ingredients
This chicken and dumplings recipe uses a few simple ingredients. Scroll down to the printable recipe card for the complete ingredient list, amounts, and step-by-step instructions.

- Boneless Skinless Chicken: This recipe works with breasts, tenderloins, or thighs. If using tenderloins, watch your cooking time as they tend to cook faster.
- Onions and Celery: Cooking the meat on a bed of these veggies gives it an earthy flavor.
- Cream of Chicken Soup: The condensed soup adds creaminess and makes it so easy to mix.
- Chicken Broth: Choose a low-sodium stock to minimize salt.
- Poultry Seasoning: The blend of thyme, sage, and rosemary goes well in chicken dishes. Plus, this way you only need one bottle instead of three.
- Frozen Mixed Veggies: Adds a pop of sweetness and color to the easy recipe. Make sure to pull them out of the freezer ahead of time, so they have time to thaw.
- Dumplings: Store-bought baking mix, milk, and garlic powder make a soft dough. You can also use this homemade Bisquick mix.
How To Make Crockpot Chicken and Dumplings
It's so quick and easy to make this meal in a slow cooker. Basically, you cook the chicken stew for a few hours, then add bagged veggies and biscuit dough.

- Place the diced veggies at the bottom of a greased crockpot. Lay the tenderloins on top.
- Whisk the condensed soup, broth, and herbs in a bowl, then pour them over the meat. Cook on low for 4-6 hours or high for 2-3 hours.
- Remove the chicken from the pot and place it on a cutting board. Pull it apart with two forks, then stir the shredded meat and thawed veggies into the hot broth.
- Gently stir together the dumpling ingredients. Use a spoon to drop the sticky dough onto the broth. Cover and cook for another hour or until the dumplings are cooked through.
Serving Suggestions
Chicken and dumplings are hearty enough to be a meal on their own, but a few simple sides make it even better.
- Fresh green salad. A spinach salad with honey balsamic dressing balances out the creamy dinner.
- Roasted veggies. Try roasted carrots, broccoli, or Brussels sprouts for extra flavor and color on your plate.
- Garlic herb bread. Because you can never have too many carbs when it comes to comfort food.
- Cranberry sauce. The sweet-tart flavor adds a delicious pop to the savory chicken filling.
- Apple crisp pie. Finish the meal with a warm slice of pie to keep the comfort food theme going.

How To Store and Reheat Leftovers
Place any leftover chicken and dumplings into two airtight containers and refrigerate for 3-4 days. The dumplings tend to soak up the broth, so refrigerate them separately.
To reheat, spoon your desired amount into a heat-safe bowl and microwave for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
BruCrew Tips
For the best results in your kitchen, be sure to follow our recipe tips.
- Thaw the frozen veggies. I love adding frozen peas, carrots, and green beans to make it even heartier and add more color. Just make sure to thaw them ahead of time, so they don't cool the hot broth.
- Season to taste. Give the broth a quick taste before you add the dumplings. Add salt, black pepper, or more herbs like thyme or parsley for more flavor.
- Don't overmix the dough. The key to soft, fluffy dumplings is to use a fork to mix the ingredients until just combined.
- Keep the lid on the crockpot. Every time you open it, it releases heat and takes more time to warm back up. Once you add the dough, keep the lid on tight to hold in the steam. That's what helps the dumplings turn out light and fluffy instead of heavy.
- Use canned biscuits for a shortcut. If you don't have time to make homemade dumplings, refrigerated biscuit dough works just as well. Cut them into quarters and drop them in during the last hour of cooking.
- Make it on the stove instead. You can make this recipe in a large pot or Dutch oven on the stove. Simmer the tenderloins in the broth and soup until tender, then shred them. Add the veggies and homemade biscuits and cover until cooked through.
