Like it or not, technology has become a way of life.  Unfortunately it is easy to become too attached to your phone or screen device.

As a full time mom and blogger, I am guilty of spending plenty of time with my face buried in my phone checking emails or social media during the day.  Some days I am just mindlessly scrolling through Facebook or Pinterest.  My husband likes to flip the phone out of my hands whenever he catches me zoning out.  It is so easy to become disconnected from the ones around you when you have a digital device easily accessible.

Everyone in our house has a phone or digital device.  If we aren’t careful, those devices come on way too many times throughout the day.  Limiting screen time has become necessary and needed so we can catch up with each other.

One rule that we have put into practice in our house is no screens at the dinner table.  We sit down as the whole family at least 4 or 5 nights a week for dinner together.  This is our time to find out what is going in school and what activities are coming up.  We also like to ask what one good thing happened during the day and what one hard thing happened during the day.

Phones and digital devices are not allowed to be at the table.  By keeping screens off during this time, we are able to focus on each other better.

For many years, Smuckers has promoted the Power of Family Meals.  This is a drive to focus on the benefits of eating together as a family.  Recently they launched their Disconnect to Reconnect campaign.

Disconnect to Reconnect is a movement to get families to unplug at the dinner table at least one meal a week, or more often.  This is definitely something that is close to my heart.   So we are excited to participate in this campaign, and our family will be taking this Disconnect to Reconnect pledge for every meal.

Will you join us by shutting down your devices during dinner?  Your family is more important than that text or email.

One meal that we enjoy every so often is breakfast for dinner.  No one in our family is a morning person, so we enjoy pancakes, eggs, and coffee for dinner instead.  My husband likes his coffee black, but everyone else likes a little bit of sugar in theirs.

Salted Caramel Mocha is one of my all time favorites, but I cannot always find it in the grocery store.  So I decided to create a homemade version that we can enjoy any time.  Whisking the ingredients together over low heat helps dissolve the dry ingredients.  Let it cool before pouring into a jar and refrigerating.

I love the idea of family meals and no screen time. We have the same rules and limit screen time after dinner as well. In this day, you just have to or you’ll become addicted! Also, I’m a BIG coffee drinker so I love seeing recipes for DIY coffee supplies. Can’t wait to try this creamer!

This sounds so easy & delicious. My issue is I am lactose interolant & can’t do the sweetened condensed milk. Is there something else I can use as a substitute?

We have already committed to a dinner that’s electronics free. (but I signed the pledge anyway!) We even do the “what good thing happened to you today” question. We might need to add the hard thing question too!

We always had that rule at my house as well. What’s the point of sitting together at the dinner table if you aren’t going to look at/interact with each other?! Blegh. But on a much brighter note, I love the idea of making homemade coffee creamer! And salted caramel mocha? YUMM!

Breakfast for dinner is my favorite meal! Especially if I can get away with french toast, pancakes, or cinnamon rolls as my “meal” and some sort of chocolate cake or fudgy brownie for dessert. ;) I love your “no screens at the table” rule, but I think that sharing one good and one hard thing about the day is even better! Sitting down for a family dinner was one of my favorite things to do, but we rarely were able to because my dad worked such long hours. My mom, brother, and I at least made an effort up until I left for college, which was almost as good. But now, it’s really sad when I go home and we always eat dinner lounging on sofas and easy chairs around the family room while watching TV. I miss the days where quality time meant sitting around a table paying attention to each other. If only I could be a part of your family and tag along at your dinner table!

I took the pledge. I’ve been an advocate of this ever since my kids were in school, some 45 years ago. I feel it is one of the most important things a family can do. So glad I accidentally found your blog, recipes & site. So inspiring.

Your coffee creamer sounds absolutely drool worthy, and a surefire way to make me want to wake up in the mornings! And I love the topic of turning off phones and all screens during dinner. It’s a rule that we have in our house as well. Every night we all sit together and we take turns asking topic questions that everyone else around the table has to answer. No phones allowed! It’s the highlight of our day :) I’m so glad that others implement that also!

We have that same family rule at the dinner table too, Jocelyn! We even enforce it with guests. My brother-in-law gets nabbed pretty often for it, but he’s a team player and shoves his phone back into his pocket pretty fast. The creamer recipe looks delish!

Love the Salted Carmel Mocha Creamer recipe… no artificial sweeteners! I pinned it to my Pinterest page. We have a rule to leave your devices off at dinner too. Gives us time to talk, catch-up and plan for up coming days.

We have always eaten together every dinner as a family.. every single night. Now that my older girls are adults, but still living at home, they are often not home for dinner. But those of us that are home, do always still eat together. And as long as cell phones have been around, we have always forbidden their use at the dinner table.

This recipe looks great. The Salted Caramel Creamer has been my favorite since it came out a year or 2 ago, but you’re right, it’s not often at the grocery store. I can’t wait to give this a try and have it readily available at home, and chemical/hydrogenated oil free! Thanks for sharing this!
