A crockpot full of Apple Chicken Meatballs is a must on game day! These easy homemade meatballs are bursting with fall flavors.
So, I hear there is this big game coming up this weekend? Basketball right? Haha! Just kidding! I know it's Super Bowl weekend.
We are actually headed to two parties that night. Booyah! Two tables full of yummy snacks and appetizers! That's what I'm going for!
I'm planning on bringing these easy chicken meatballs, this Tomato Basil Pizza Dip, and these Football Cookie Bars.
A couple weeks ago I was walking down the aisles at Walmart when I saw this Apple Whiskey barbecue sauce from Open Pit. It sounded interesting, and since it was just $1, into the cart it went.
I decided to make some chicken meatballs with a secret ingredient. I added some shredded apples because we always keep a bag of apples in our fridge for the kids to snack on, and because I thought it would add a delicious sweet flavor to the meatballs.
I peeled the skins off and put them in my Ninja food processor. 5 seconds and the apples were ready to be mixed into the meat mixture.
How to make Apple Chicken Meatballs:
- Preheat the oven. Line a sheet pan with foil and spray with nonstick spray. (full recipe at bottom of post)
- Mix together the ground chicken, cheese, apples, breadcrumbs, egg, and seasonings.
- Shape the meatballs into 24 even balls and place on prepared pan.
- Bake for 20-22 minutes, then remove and place in crockpot with your choice of barbecue sauce.
Cute tooth picks are not required, but they sure do make homemade meatballs more fun! You could even pick out the ones that match the team colors. If you like to match things like I do!

Apple Chicken Meatballs
Apple Chicken Meatballs get their flavor from ground chicken and shredded apples. A sweet apple whiskey barbecue sauce compliments it very well.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground chicken
- 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- ½ cup shredded apples
- ½ cup plain breadcrumbs
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon diced garlic
- 1 egg
- 1 Tablespoon dried parsley flakes
- ½ cup Open Pit Apple Whiskey barbecue sauce (or any other flavor)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a large sheet pan with foil and spray with nonstick spray.
- Combine all the ingredients except the barbecue sauce in a bowl and mix very well.
- Shape the meat mixture into 24 big meatballs. Place on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake the meatballs for 20-22 minutes, or until done.
- Remove from oven and place the meatballs in a crock pot. Add the barbecue sauce and stir. Heat until warm. Refrigerate leftovers
Notes
Feel free to use more or less barbecue sauce according to your taste.

I just made these apple whiskey chicken meatballs for a company event and they are yummy! I couldn't find the BBQ sauce so I got a whiskey BBQ sauce at my local Wegmans and whisked some apple cider into it. I also added a little sage with my parsley flakes because I still had some out from dinner the night before. My hubby gave the thumbs up to make again!

I was very disappointed in this recipe. I made these yesterday for a Christmas party and only one person out of 25 liked them. Wish they turned out because the recipe sounded delicious!

I am really sorry to hear that. My entire family loved them!

These sound so good and are going to our office holiday carry in. One question, does it matter what kind of apples you use? It didn't specify in the recipe so I am assume it doesn't. Not sure if I want to go more the granny smith or something sweeter.
Jocelyn Brubaker
I don't think it would matter which apple you used. In fact I have made them a few times and I think I had different kinds each time now that you mention it. I hope you enjoy them 🙂

These sound divine! Thanks for sharing this recipe, I might use these for the next big game day party at our house!!

Is the 1/2 c. BBQ sauce mixed into the chicken mix, since it says "mix all ingredients"? Do you just add however much BBQ sauce with the meatballs into the crockpot? Or is the 1/2 cup all you use over them? It just seemed so little. Just want to make sure. My husband loves chicken apple sausages, so he will really like these. Thanks!
Jocelyn Brubaker
Sorry that was so unclear. The barbecue sauce is for after the meatballs are fully cooked. You can use as little or as much sauce as you like on them. I hope your husband likes them.

These look amazing! I love meatballs in all forms, + am always looking for new recipes to try. Will definitely have to try these. And coincidentally I have meatballs on the menu for tonight - honey-chipotle turkey meatballs. =)
Jocelyn Brubaker
Oh, now I want your meatballs. That flavor sounds awesome!!!
