Candy Cupcakes
M&M's have always been one of my favorite candies. There is something about those milk chocolate candies that "melt in your mouth, not in your hand" that I love every time.
I like to keep our pantry stocked with bags of candy and chocolate chips, so I'm always ready to bake something fun. The other day, I decided to make these M&M cupcakes again. Who doesn't love a good cupcake? Especially one filled with colorful, candy-coated chocolate candies!
These simple cupcakes are filled with milk chocolate candies and topped with creamy vanilla buttercream and also more M&Ms. They are great for parties or just when you want a cupcake. The colorful candy shells give the treats a fun, tie-dyed look that kids and adults will love.
Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Colorful and Fun: The M&M's candy shells add a pop of color to the cupcakes, making them pretty and fun to eat.
- Delicious Flavor Combo: Enjoy moist vanilla cupcakes with rich frosting and crunchy M&M candies for a delightful flavor combination!
- Party-Ready: This dessert is great for any party, whether it's a birthday or a casual gathering. Everyone will love it!
- BONUS: If you love cupcakes, you will not want to miss out on these cherry chip cupcakes or Reese's chocolate peanut butter cupcakes.
Key Ingredients
This M&M cupcake recipe requires only a few simple ingredients. A vanilla cake mix and colorful candies transform these treats into a bright and colorful dessert.
- White Cake Mix: To make this recipe, you will need one boxed cake mix, eggs, oil, and milk. You can also use a yellow cake mix.
- Instant White Chocolate Pudding Mix: Adding dry pudding mix to the batter makes the moistest cupcakes. Make sure you purchase instant pudding!
- Mini M&M's: The smaller candies are lighter, so they do not sink to the bottom of cupcakes as much as larger ones.
- Vanilla Buttercream Frosting: This white frosting allows the candies to pop out on dessert tables.
How To Make M&M Cupcakes
If you're celebrating a special occasion or want a fun activity for your kids, try these tasty M&M cupcakes.
- Make the batter. Beat the cake, pudding, milk, oil, and eggs with an electric mixer in a large mixing bowl.
- Add the mixins. Use a spatula to scrape the sides of the bowl, then gently stir in the mini M&Ms.
- Bake and cool. Spoon the cupcake batter into 24 regular-sized cupcake liners. Place the muffin pan in a preheated oven and bake until the tops of the cupcakes spring back slightly when pressed or a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean. Cool on a wire rack.
- Decorate and serve. Use a piping bag fitted with icing tip 1M to add a swirl of vanilla frosting. Then, immediately press a few extra candies into the soft frosting.
Storage Recommendations
Store the cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for three days. If you have leftovers for longer, keep them in the refrigerator and bring them to room temperature before serving.
You can also freeze unfrosted cupcakes for up to 3 months. Thaw them at room temperature and frost before serving.
Tips and Tricks
- Don't over-mix the batter. Beat it until the ingredients are combined to avoid dense or tough cupcakes.
- Let the cupcakes cool completely before frosting to prevent the icing from melting.
- If the frosting is too thick, add a bit more milk. If it's too thin, add more powdered sugar until you reach the desired consistency.
- Transform the batch of cupcakes into a festive treat by matching the candy colors to match the holidays. (think red/green for Christmas and red/blue for 4th of July)
- Frost the cooled cupcakes right before serving so the M&M's don't discolor the frosting.
- Try dark chocolate buttercream frosting, peanut butter frosting, or marshmallow buttercream for a fun and delicious topping.
FAQs
Absolutely! Experiment with different varieties, such as peanut, crispy, or caramel cold brew for a fun twist. Chop the larger candies so you don't have big chunks.
Yes. You can customize your cupcakes by adding ingredients like mini chocolate chips, nuts, chopped candy bars, or toffee bits.
You can substitute the regular cake mix with your preferred gluten-free mix. Make sure to check that your other ingredients are also gluten-free.
The mini candies don't sink as much as the larger ones do. Toss the M&Ms in some flour before folding them into the batter. This will help suspend them in the batter and prevent them from sinking to the bottom.

I've heard great things about P90X, but it's definitely a butt-kicker. Good for you for taking control and telling those sweets who's boss! I can relate to how difficult that can be. Baking and blogging can definitely be a hazard to one's waistline.
