Why These Oreo Cake Cookies Work
For some reason this week I am obsessed with all things cookies. Not just any cookies though. Easy cake mix cookies have become my favorite type of cookie to make.
They are easy to mix up, you can customize them with your favorite mix-ins, and they stay soft and chewy for days.
These cookies and cream cookies made with a cake mix, chocolate chips, and Oreo cookies are one of our daughter's favorite cookies. Of course, anything with cookies and cream is never a bad idea!
What are Cake Mix Cookies?
Cake mix cookies are a shortcut cookie made from using a store bought cake mix instead of regular dry ingredients.
Using just a few more ingredients, you can transform any flavor of cake mix into a soft delicious cookie.
The fun comes when you start deciding what extra ingredients you want to add to the cookie. Here is a list of some of our favorite mix-ins.
- Candy - M&M's, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Butterfingers, Bunch a Crunch, Reese's Pieces, Peppermint Patties, Rolos
- Dried Fruit - cherries, blueberries, cranberries, shredded coconut
- Cookies - Oreos, Nutter Butters, Chips Ahoy, Animal Crackers
- Chocolate Chips - white chocolate, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, butterscotch, peanut butter, mint, peppermint
- Extras - Sprinkles, Nuts, Maraschino Cherries
Ingredients Needed
These cake mix Oreo cookies are so easy to make in minutes with a cake mix and a few other ingredients. Trust me and make a double batch because the cookies and cream goodness will disappear in a hurry.
- Vanilla Cake Mix - You will only be using the dry powdered mix.
- Butter - Set it out ahead of time, so it is soft enough to mix in.
- Egg - Provides the moisture needed to create a soft cookie dough.
- Cream Cheese - The secret ingredient that gives these cake mix cookies a soft and gooey texture.
- Vanilla - Adds a splash of flavor.
- Oreo Cookies - Chop or crush the cookies into chunks. Be careful not to crush them into crumbs when you mix them in.
- Chocolate Chips - A mixture of white chocolate chips and milk chocolate chips is a good combo. Feel free to use whatever you like or have on hand.
Have an extra package of Oreos? Make these chocolate Oreo cookies or these Oreo brownies.
How to make Cookies and Cream Cookies
The dough for these chocolate chip cookies and cream cookies comes together in minutes. Be sure to plan enough time because the dough does need some chill time before baking.
- Mix together the dry cake mix, butter, cream cheese, egg, and vanilla until a soft dough forms.
- Gently stir in chocolate chips and Oreo cookie chunks. Do not over mix.
- Refrigerate the cookie dough for at least 60 minutes. (2 hours is better.)
- Scoop dough into 24 even dough balls, roll into a ball, and bake.
Tips and Tricks
- Adding cream cheese to the batter makes these white cake mix cookies taste like Oreo cheesecake cookies. Make sure you set the butter and cream cheese out ahead of time.
- Feel free to use your favorite mix-ins. Today we went with Oreo cookie chunks and two kinds of chocolate chips. There is no right or wrong combo when it comes to these easy cake mix cookies.
- Make sure you do not over bake them. They WILL look under done when the timer goes off! Trust me, and take them out of the oven.
- These easy cookies and creme cookies will continue to bake on the hot baking sheet! Give the tops of the cookies a tap with a flat spatula after 2 minutes if they are too puffy. When they cool completely, they will be set up and ready to eat.
Storage Recommendations
You can make the dough for these cookies 1-2 days ahead of time. Keep the dough in a covered container in the refrigerator until ready to bake. You can also freeze the dough balls in a freezer bag. Thaw in the fridge before baking.
On the Counter - Store the baked cookies in a tightly sealed container once they have cooled completely.
In the Freezer - Baked cookies can also be made ahead of time and frozen for later. Place cookies in individual bags or in between layers of parchment paper in larger bags or containers. They will keep for 1-2 months in the freezer.
Holiday Variations
These cookies and cream cookies are so easy to customize for different holidays by using colored candies, sprinkles, and different flavors of Oreo cookies.
- Chocolate Mint Cookies - chocolate cake mix, mint Oreos, mint M&Ms
- 4th of July Cookies -vanilla cake mix, Oreo cookies, red white and blue M&Ms and sprinkles
- Chocolate Halloween Cookies - chocolate cake mix, Oreos with orange frosting, Halloween M&M's

hi, curious to know if you prefer to use semi sweet chocolate chips or milk chocolate ? thank you!
Jocelyn
I actually prefer dark chocolate chips, but also use semi-sweet chips a lot of the times too! I hope you enjoy the cookies!
Karen
Made these cookies for a cookie exchange and they were sooo popular! I was sort of expecting them to be overpoweringly sweet with the Oreos and two kinds of chocolate chips, but they were actually just perfect and so deliciously soft! Great recipe and super easy as well ????????
Jocelyn
Yay! I am so glad you liked them and they were a hit at the party. They are one of my daughters absolute favorite cookies 🙂
Lisa
Can I freeze these after their baked?
Jocelyn
As long as they are completely cooled, you should be able to freeze these just fine. I hope you enjoy the cookies!
Jen
The “print recipe” link doesn’t give me the option to actually print it. Has that feature been taken down?
Jocelyn
I just checked and was able to print that recipe from the link in the recipe card. You might need to check your printer settings to make sure it is set up to print right.
Chelsea Ramirez
At what temperature do you bake these cookies? Also how long?
Jocelyn
All of this info is in the recipe card. Step 1 says to preheat the oven to 350 degrees, and step 5 says to bake the cookies for 10 minutes. I hope that helps and that you enjoy the cookies!!!
Danielle
If I made these cookies on a Sunday for a Friday party will they still be good in a air tight container or do you recommend freezing them ?
Jocelyn
I think they would be fine as long as the container is tightly sealed. Cake mix cookies are always the ones I choose to mail because they do stay soft for days. I hope you enjoy the cookies!!!
Michelle
Do you always recommend using cookies as one of the mix-ins? Say I wasted to do a strawberry cake, with white chocolate chips. Would I use 3 cups of white chocolate chips, or find a cookie that would work with my cake flavor?
Jocelyn
You don't have to use cookies for a mix in. Sometimes I do a mixture of candy or chocolate chips instead. Like in these Chocolate Candy Cookies. https://insidebrucrewlife.com/chocolate-candy-cookies/ I do think that 3 cups of chips would be way to much for that amount of batter though.
Jess
Can you taste the cream cheese in the cookies? If so, can it be omitted?
Jocelyn
You cannot taste the cream cheese in the cookies. It just adds a soft texture that is amazing!!
Angie Casterlin
Two questions:
1. Are the cookies cake like or soft, most chewy?
2. Mailing these to my Army son is lives across the country. Do they stay fresh for awhile?
Jocelyn
These cookies are soft and puffy, no chewy, but not really cake like either. They definitely stay soft and fresh for days, so they are great for mailing. I hope your son enjoys them!!!
Joei Lopes
Is it salted or unsalted butter?
Jocelyn
You can honestly use either. I generally always use unsalted though.
Mickey
It would have been helpful to put the receipe further up. Had to flip thru a lot of pages on you site, then sign up for pintrest, and still couldnt find it!! Wasnt o the video either. Last chance I looked the entire (quite long) post on fb. Just saying.
Jocelyn
You shouldn't have had to go through many pages to get to the recipe. And you definitely don't have to sign up for anything like Pinterest to get to the recipes either. It's as easy as opening a blog page and scrolling down below a few pictures to find the printable card.
Shannon
How long do you bake them?
Jocelyn
The recipe says to bake them for 10 minutes in step 5. I hope you enjoy the cookies!
Arif
How many gram of cake mix require for this recipe? ????
Jocelyn
I usually use a 15.25 ounce Pillsbury cake mix which is 432 grams. I hope that helps.
Chris peele
What flavor. I can only fine French vanilla mix. Are you using a white mix,or a yellow cake mix by pillsbury?
Jocelyn
I usually buy the white mix so the colors stand out better. The yellow or French vanilla will work fine too. Your cookie will just be a little more cream/yellow colored.
Ethan
Would I be able to use a yellow cake mix in stead of vanilla. Isn’t the o my difference is they use the yokes?
Jocelyn
Yes, you can use any flavor of cake mix you like.
Ashley
I’m in the process of making these right now! I used French vanilla cake mix by better Crocker. Couldn’t find just a vanilla one. I have the dough in the fridge chilling right now! I will let everyone know how they turn out. Super excited!!
Jocelyn
Yup, any cake mix will work in this recipe. I hope you enjoy the cookies. They are our daughter's absolute favorite cookie 🙂
Muhaini
U mentioned 1 vanilla cake mixed... what’s d quantity? Is it 250gm. In d video looks like 1 bar of butter and 1 bar of cheese... does the recipe list the correct amount of butter and cheese? I’m try to make for the festive
Jocelyn
The recipe has the correct amounts you need to make one batch of cookies. The cake mix is a store bought mix like Pillsbury.
Aminath
Vanilla cake mix can you elaborate I don't want to use those box ones
Jocelyn
It's a store bought cake mix. I usually use Pillsbury.
Melly
Hello (: can I know whats the ingredient needed for cake mix?
Jocelyn
It's a store bought cake mix 🙂
LK
I love these cookies!! Usually I make them with milk chocolate chips. Would semi sweet be better? Thanks!!
Jocelyn
It all depends on what chocolate chips you prefer. I usually make them with dark chocolate chips, but that's what I like. I'm glad you are enjoying this recipe 🙂
Jesyka
